Engineering

Engineering involves solving problems and challenges through the application of scientific knowledge. It’s a hugely diverse and dynamic area with exciting opportunities to invent, collaborate and make a difference - potentially on a global scale.

At Ara we focus on practical, applied engineering with the aim of preparing you for a diverse spectrum of employment opportunities, both in New Zealand and overseas. You can be confident that your Ara engineering qualification gives employers a clear signal that you have the skills, knowledge and practical experience needed to be effective in the workplace from day one.

Our engineering programmes have been developed nationally with industry to be relevant and up-to-date, and to equip you for key engineering roles within the industry. Our strong industry connections also provide many opportunities for you to undertake real-world projects which form an important part of your studies.

Your learning will take place in a brand new, purpose-built facility at our City campus in Christchurch. In addition to modern classrooms, you’ll have access to well-equipped workshops which provide the opportunity to create prototypes and to evaluate and validate your engineering solutions and designs.

Other facilities include:

  • Computer Aided Design (CAD) suites
  • Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) and Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machining
  • 3D printers and laser cutters
  • Workshops for testing and bringing your engineering designs to life

At Ara you can choose to study the Bachelor of Engineering Technology (BEngTech), or the New Zealand Diploma of Engineering (NZDE), studying either mechanical, civil, electrical or electronics disciplines. Additional study options include certificates and diplomas in computer aided design (CAD), plus a graduate diploma in computer aided design.
